Hard as rock

Been quite busy lately with not much time to post comments and pics, but will try to get back into the swing of it. This is a morning shot into the Black Canyon of the Gunnison (mid Aug). The light was very directional and harsh so I applied some slight filtering (Color Efex Pro). I like the overwhelming feeling of all the rock in the image.

As I was scrolling down I noticed that this image feels stronger with the horizon cropped out to give it more of an abstract feel. For my tastes I feel like you also pulled too much out of the shadows - it feels too flat now and doesn't have a sense of depth. I would back off on that adjustment so as to introduce some more of the shadows again. Other than these two suggestions I really like what you have done with this image. It is nicely composed and presented. Thanks for sharing.

Definitely some impressive rock. Might be tempted to crop out that bit of sky at the top and make it just rock.

The mystery of where that canyon goes and how deep it is works for me. Very nice.

I like the inclusion of the rim of the canyon rim. Nice work. You have me wanting to visit Black Canyon again.

I like the layers of rock and all of their textures. The details and the higher contrast seen in the larger version improve the scene a lot. In looking at the larger version, I'd like to see a bit more up top, because I really like the bright green URC and the sage greens in the distant plateau.

The large version is stunning. The harsh rock and soft greens and blues in the bg (or would it be top in this instance) are a wonderful contrast. I love this one. Great work

It has been awhile since I've been to the Black Canyon but I know it is a great place to feel awestruck. Even though you were working with harsh light you were able to get some nice green color in the final piece. It all work well for me.

I recognized the BC from the thumb! I agree with Brian, the whole strength of BC shots is in depth; it's what defines the BC, and the way this is processed renders it flat. Also, im not sure a top crop would work, but there's not enough space on the horizon. I think maybe a B&W conversion with some serious work on the tones might make it work for me. I'll call myself on the fence with it.
