Last leaves, first snow

Spent the last week in West Virginia. I made this image last Monday in Canaan Valley SP, as the first snow of the season began to fall. Thank you for taking the time to look. C&C much appreciated. Large image posted.

Hey Mathew - Glad to see the snow flying! Had my 2nd hike in the snow this weekend in NH. The trunks make a nice abstract pattern, but the image seems to lack sharpness and contrast. Maybe it's the moving snow in the image.

Thanks Harry. I see your point. I was trying not to overdo the sharpening and contrast because the falling snow lent a certain softness to the scene that I wanted to preserve, but I agree, it probably came up a bit short.

Matthew, This image works quite nice for me. I especially like the soft feel with the falling snow. Nice comp and colors as well as a wonderful mood. It does lack contrast but makes up for it with the mood for me. Almost an impressionistic feel here which I'm enjoying.

I like the subtle blues emanating from the trees.

I like the feeling of the image. It feels very peaceful. I am on the fence about he sharpening.

Works perfectly for me. I'm sure compression is taking a bit of a toll here, but that just comes with the territory.

The snow adds an interesting texture, and I think it is responsible -- along with the somewhat subtle colors -- for the painterly feel of this photo. I like that.

This is a hard subject to pull off well due to the immense amount of detail that demands its attention and the lack of contrast separating the detail from each other. Given that, I still feel you pulled this off well. I would sharpen it a bit more as it will inherently add local contrast to start with.

I probably wouldn't have known it was snow if you hadn't mentioned it--but i like the pointilistic effect it produces, looks like an abstract painting.

The large version is definitely worth the visit. Better detail and less compression. I like the impressionistic feel with the snow flying.

Nice! Morris is right, larger version is a must for this work. Red standing against colder tones of trees is working well, snow is important for an effect I think. I wish there was a tiny bit of darker trees above the red.

Matthew,

I think this is outstanding! Stan and Morris comments echo mine as far as this having an impressionistic/painting look to it that I just find beautiful here. There is much to enjoy and appreciate with this - and I think regardless of sharpening concerns.

I do think this smaller version does your image an injustice, but the larger version really starts to reveal the real beauty of this image. The only thing I can think of to suggest would be a crop off the top for a more pano format. Not necessarily for a pano format, but much of the top is gray and with the same tone and lack of details, much of the top is not necessary. But a very minor suggestion as I love this very much. Well done!

Awesome, Matthew! I like the colors and textures in the trees. The red-leafed area is a plus.

Terrific picture! The snow makes for a very artistic look that's impossible to evaluate in the small version and only beginning to show up in the larger version. I bet this looks great on your monitor and would also be wonderful printed large and hung.

Thank you for all of your comments and suggestions. I am working on a separate version with somewhat increased sharpening that I will post soon (after I did out from the pile of obligations at work). The small version in particular looks muddy when compared to my screen. I have a better appreciation for for when others describe problems with compression that has not been so apparent to me previously. I'm looking forward to printing this at some point.

Very cool image Matthew. I like the almost abstract feel here. I bet a large print would really showcase the details very well.

Excellent. You caught the perfect moment. The last leaves and the first snow. How perfect. Comp and light look great and the larger version is a real treat.

Works great for me - any futher sharpening would ruin the soft, subtle feel.
Congrats on the WP!
