Juvenile Goldfinch
by Dennis Plank
The adults mostly left some time ago, but we have a good flock of juveniles hanging around the yard. They're quite nondescript and blend amazingly well with yellowing leaves. We have a birch that they like and I can sit under it listening to their chatter and it will still take 10 minutes to start picking them out of the foliage. If something spooks them 50 might pop out where I'd seen 5 or 10.
1DIV, 500 mm f4 ISL + 1.4TC, Black Widow on RRS legs, f8, 1/640, iso 400, Av mode with no compensation. Cropped to 6 MP. Taken September 30th at 8:23 am. This one was shot in an apple tree where they forage for leaf parasites.
