Baltimore Oriole Female

From this morning around 9:00am. Like my last post, nearly full frame using the 2x extender. F/10, 1/800th, ISO 400, 1D M3, 300mm f/2.8
Clear, sunny and natural light. IS inadvertently turned off
I read up on the female & learned they weave remarkable hanging nests from slender fibers. Didn't know that

Unusually dark for this species, but I haven't seen one now in many years.

Nice detail and clean composition.

Very nice shot Howard. Everything looks great as usual I am, however, amazed at the dark almost brown color of this bird. It must be kind of rare. I didn't know they came in this color. I photographed an oriole nest this spring and the female was a very bright orange/yellow color. It's posted on my website in the opening slide show and in recent work gallery if you care to check it out.

I got three clicks of the BO off this morning Robert. In one of the others, it looks a bit lighter in the chest area with full direct light. Still dark though with a burnt yellow color at the breast, and overall mostly an "orangy" brownish look.
It may be exaggerated slightly because of the lights direction, and how it falls across the upper portion of the bird here as well :wavey:

You can see the difference the lights direction can make here, same bird a few seconds before.
I like this shot better, but clipped the tail.

I love the second shot you posted the best (though I know it has a clipped tail), but both have great detail and are wonderful looks at this bird.

Number two is much closer to what I have seen colorwise. Amazing how much difference in color the angle of the light can make. Both are great shots.

Howard, the color match throughout this composition is artistic & perfect. Strictly form a Nature Photography point of view it would be better if the tail was in focus. I love it!

Hi Howard...NIce shot! I'm wondering if you might have an Audubon Oriole here? Just posted a Balty, and in Sibley's, yours looks close to the Audubon?? Just wondering...you are in Texas! Sharon
