What Saved My Life

While on an organized trip to La Paz Waterfalls in Costa Rica - a place ~6,000ft above sea level in the tropical jungle, I found myself in the epicenter of a 6.4 magnitude earthquake which killed more than 40 people around me. The place was famous with its cascade of 3 ~60ft tall waterfalls, as well as with its butterfly, reptile and mammal houses.

Instead of going to the waterfalls - 500 feet away as I planned initially, I went first to the butterfly garden. At the moment the earthquake struck, I was taking the portrait of this butterfly. Should I have stuck with my initial plans, I would have been buried alive at the waterfalls, which were leveled by natural disaster. 24 hours after the earthquake, I was airlifted from the tropical jungle after having spend a night in pouring rain and numerous aftershocks.

Wow, what a story, Andrey! I can certainly see why this photo is especially meaningful to you for, as you said, this little butterfly shot literally saved your life! The theme talks about "a meaningful photo to you even if not technically perfect". However, I would say this image looks near perfect to me. Wonderful comp, great colors, and perfect DOF choice. Love the butterfly's curly perch. Great image and great story.

OMG! Glad you are alive and well. What a story!! This image is a wonderful image in its own right, but should be printed large and hung prominently in your home as a reminder of your ordeal. Our hearts go out to the people and their families who were not as lucky as you.

Wow, what a story! This is a great shot of the butterfly. The orchid lip makes a neat perch, but it's orientation has me thinking that you've rotated this 90 degrees.

Beautiful photo and amazing story - but what is not technically terrific about this image? I can't imagine it getting any better. I especially like the three different color combination.

Harrowing! Absolutely harrowing. Bless this butterfly and whatever it was that took you off of your original plans. Wow.
