WC: "Emerald Myst"

This is a very emotional WC for me...

From 1996-2000, I lived on a wonderful 55 ft custom pleasure trawler and explored many countries. We bought it in Hilton Head, and brought it home to Oregon through the Panama Canal, in a 4-month excursion.
We spent time in Florida, (recovering from a very bad white squall 4 hrs after we left Hilton Head), Costa Rica East and West coasts), The Caymans, Nicaragua, San Andres Island, Honduras, the San Blas Islands, El Salvador, Guatemala, and Mexico.

There were many days at sea when we were totally alone. And, yes, there ARE modern day pirates - we encountered them off the coast of Nicaragua and Costa Rica.

We spent summers in Alaska, exploring the coast and inlets. We often didn't see another boat for days, and the toughest decision was what to fish for, for dinner (salmon, ling cod, halibut, shrimp, crab, oysters, rockfish?) or how long to stay in that particular inlet. No TV, no phone, no net, no newspapers. We checked in with my sister every few weeks when we in port somewhere.
It was the most peaceful, serene, carefree time of my life.

I was not so much into photography then, but had one of the first Sony Digitals - 2 MP, I think, that wrote to floppy disks. I'd give anything now to have had a better camera and better skills!

This is the M/V "Emerald Myst", anchored in "No-Name Bay", Alaska. Poor photo; priceless and "forever" memories.

I miss those days immensely. Life is just too complicated sometimes now.

Anchored in Misty Fiords, Tarr Inlet, 6/21/99 - Margerie Glacier ahead.
Later, exploring Glacier Bay in a private yacht was amazing.

Sandy,
This is a Marvelous Trawler and I can appreciate how special time on the water can be, when everything you do is determined somehow by nature and weather. Really great post. :toast:

Sandy, my Alaska son just bought a 48 foot sailboat. They (son, his wife, 3 kids and a dog) plan to come back to the lower 48 anyway in 2014, eventually winding up in the Caribbean. Yay! I'll hopefully get to see more of my Grandkids!

Anyway, I feel your nostalgia. I sailed for a number of years, and I miss it.

Wow, Sandy, what a precious and priceless life experience to have had! I think many of us long to do something similar at some point in our lives. . .but you really did it! :toast: I can imagine this photo brings back a wave (no pun intended) of memories for you. Maybe you can look to do a repeat in retirement?

What a great experience, with so much peace, quiet, and simplicity. Ahhh, for the "good old days".

Things are different in Alaska. This must be a telephoto image. The trees grow right down to the waterline. I assume telephoto cmpression must be significat because the boat is not on the bottom that near to shore when the tide is lowish. It looks like you had a pleasant time of it. Rockfish and ling cod are perks of coastal living, but no mention of birds?

I don't envy you the pirates, but I do envy the summers in Alaska. Thank you for the story and the photo.
