I worked on this image again. I wanted to see what it would look like with the background retaining some of the original light and color of , but being completely blurred because it was so busy. I am on the fence as to which I like the best, this one or the one with the black background. I will appreciate any and all comments and critiques.

Canon 40D

While I like both I prefer the one with the black BG. The abstract quality and the color are diminished somewhat in this version. Too much competition with the BG in terms of color.

Richard:
You will get different answer to your question
Whilst I am generally partial to black bg, I like this version more; I think the similarity of colors in the bg makes the composition more coherent and the general golden glow in the image is enhanced.

I prefer this version as well because of the golden tones and the BG color. However, I find the broken limb in the ULC distracting, so I'd crop the top the bottom of the scar.

Richard - Both versions work for me well but I have a bias for natural backgrounds, so may be I prefer this a wee bit over the dark version. However processed backgrounds are not my cup of tea and somehow it does not appeal to me. I guess sometimes its a compromise solution so I am beginning to appreciate these better.

I like the amount of texture in the BG too Richard. Nice, rich color and very nice golden light. Excellent.

The other is more striking with the dark background, but this is organic and works well, but differently.

Tough call,Richard. I think the black makes a better abstract, but I still love the bg in this one.

Here I go out on a limb again. I like this BG because it gives a source to the light. I was also looking at a crop to just under the broken wood. Wonderful work at any angle.
