You can't hide!

Gallery: Macro & Close-upPosted July 28, 201286 views7 comments
Finally, for the first time this year, I've dragged my lazy self out to the Botanical Gardens to photograph some damselflies and dragonflies. Conditions were not all that great, with some wind making life hard for the photographer, but I still got a couple of shots I like. This is one of them.

Techs: Nikon D300, Sigma 400/5.6 APO Macro, PN-11, tripod, cable release.

Please let me know what you think!

Nice catch, he's looking right at the camera. Good sharp focus on the head, too bad the tail isn't in focus. Hard thing to do with a macro. Maybe push your ISO up so you could get the aperture down to f/29 or so. I suppose alot would depend on the angle he was at.

Sharp detail where it counts, like this peek-a-boo theme a lot Basil.
Good colors, light, and the neutral color of this BG works well :toast:

I like the way you composed this with the damselfly peeking out from behind the stem. I wish the tail was in focus, but you got the eye in focus. Thanks for sharing this!

Always nice to see these Damsel trying to hide behind a stem. I think I would like to see a crop with only the upper part of this Damsel without the OOF part. :toast:

Excellent capture of this peeking damsel, Basil. Terrific detail in the head, and a nice clean BG. The cute pose really sets this one apart. I think Ellen's crop suggestion has merit. Cropping this into a standard horizontal format would provide an alternate image really focused on the peeking damsel - a major cuteness factor. Not necessarily a better image, just an alternate one.

Thanks for all your comments! Here's the repost, according to your suggestions. Kinda minimalistic.

Damsel's are a lot of fun, because this "hiding behind a stem and peaking out at the danger" behavior is very common. Love the sharpness of the eye, feels like a laser pointing at me, and the water drops on the stem. I prefer the original post because the eye captures all of the attention while the stem and body better tell the story of the behavior.
