I am curious about your thoughts on this one.
Taken at first light in the Kruger Park last year.

A slight crop from all round but it was shot tight with this kind of result in mind.

Techs:
Nikon D3s with Nikkor 500mm f4 VR-II
f5.6 @ 1/640 SS @ ISO-560

Just the right amount of DoF to separate the head and neck from the body, and the light is perfect for what you were trying to do, Morkel. I think the left half is great, but the combination of the bulging body and the extra space on the right keep drawing my eye away from the face. I wonder if a tighter crop at right (which I understand would create an extreme vertical frame) would at least give the face more emphasis.

Hello Morkel, I tend to agree with Max about there being just a tad too much body and I think this would have been stronger if there was more light on the Impala's face and less on the body.

Having just stepped away and come back for another look to finish my comment I must say, this is growing on me.

Nice to see you here

Jamie

An obese impala!? I appreciate you trying something different here Morkel. That said, what I like about the image are the colors, play of light and the clear eye, ear and horn. The chosen crop, however, and the perspective distortion by the long FL is something that I find less appealing. I understand where Max is coming from with his crop suggestion; that might result in a more appealing image.

Morkel, I like it as it is. The sharp eye is what IMHO makes this image work. Great light on the subject. Just wondering do you have a full face image in this light? Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for the varied and honest feedback guys.
I have a bit more of the face on the left. Will try an alternate crop and post tonight...

Hey Morkel...I really like what you are going for here. I think Max has a really good suggestion though...but still think it would be even better if you have another chance to re-caoture this with less body in the shot to begin with and then do a vertical crop. Hope to see you try it again, because I think it is a great idea for composition.
