I spotted this Soldier Fly (Odontomyia cincta) in the grass the other day. Same sunny mid-day light as the damsels, as I lay on the ground shooting. Anyway, a new one to me.

F/18, 1/100th, ISO 500, 1D M3, Sigma 150mm f/2.8 + Kenko 1.4x and fill handheld.

Howard - Very unusual angle - good balance between the face and the body. I'd love to see a shot showing the face in full if you have it.

Interesting perspective. I like the view of the legs wrapped around the grass head. Very complementary BG as well. :toast:

Here's another shot as I tried to follow it near the water..The only other shot I have Ram.
Gives one a better idea of what it looks like. I know it's a long shot, but If anyone happens to know the species?

Cool fly, Howard. Looks like a soldier fly (Stratiomyidae), perhaps Odontomyia cincta.

Great POV in this image, Howard. I like your comp in this and how the fly is clinging to the stem. Good focus on the bug and nicely complementary background. Nice find!

I really like this one Howard! You captured this from an unusual view point and the comp works really well here. Nicely seen and captured!

Howard, an excellent shot. Detail in the subject is great but for me the matching colors of bug & BG make it special.

Ahhhh, the stuff of nightmares. Neat capture and great observation to catch it. Amazing how different the two views are, the original post makes me think of a caterpillar....just a few legs short.
