Wild Daylily

by Carolyn Derstine

Gallery: FloraPosted July 1, 2012122 views10 comments
These wild daylilies are blooming along roadsides, in fields, and in gardens all around our area right now. I have incorporated them into several of my flower beds. This was taken the same day I took the spider/daylily shots I posted recently in the macro gallery.

Canon Rebel T1i. 180mm macro lens. F/8 for 1/5 sec. ISO 100. Tripod mounted, flash.

Eye-catching...orange against green is powerful. This glows. Good lighting...good b/g....nice content. I would like a tad more dof to get those pollen-heads sharp. And this is really gonna sound picky,...but, I just caught myself forgetting to pay attention to it...OK...picky...picky...but, I would swing the camera to the left a few degrees to get separation of the two pollen-heads on the left side ...placed against the green b/g they would pop more. Go ahead...say it..."oh brother". Nicely done...lovely shot!

Great use of flash and really excellent subject! These are blooming in my area as well, but I don't have any in my yard (maybe next year!). I would like a slight more focus on the stamen, but otherwise a lovely shot!

Great color combination with a fine glow throughout. I really like how the one petal arching left parallels the frame. The sharpness of the pistil is amazing. I too find myself wishing for sharp anthers when I look at the larger version.

Very nice. Great balance of ambient and flash exposure that is lacking in some pics. I agree with the comments on focus. :jump:

Carolyn - The anthers have some good contrast and hence they really don't look quite that unsharp. They are sharp enough to work for me.

I really like the 3D feel to the frame. The curved petals really seem like they are coming at me. Perfect green background blurred enough to make this Lily pop.

Very nice work, I'd say.

Carolyn:
Wonderful image :toast: Very rich in color, form and textures. Love the curls in the petals and the 3D look. :toast:

Well-captured Carolyn, not always easy with these lilies.

Cheers.
