This was taken in an increasingly popular side stream in Oregon's Columbia River Gorge. I was fortunate enough to take two separate trips to the PNW this past May, and am just now getting around to processing images (an admitted bad habit of mine). The PNW is truly an amazing area to explore and has an overwhelming abundance of photographic opportunities, but what really made the biggest impression on me were the many incredibly friendly locals and friends I I was able to meet along the way.

I hope to get through more images and post a few more here in the coming weeks, but until then, thank you in advance for any C&C. Cheers.

Single shot double processed in ACR to retain highlights and for shadow recovery.

Looks great Jared. Love the moss covered rocks and the centerpiece of the waterfall. Nice work!

The centered waterfall works quite well in your composition. Really like the sculptural quality of the moss covered log on the right and the wonderful greens throughout. A beautiful image. Very, very nice.

I quite enjoy this. I like the gradation of dark to light from right to left and that the water flows towards the dark areas creating a nice balance. Also, the greens are very nice and pop.

The lovely scene nicely fills out the frame compostionally. The forest glows appealingly in the light.

The composition works quite well, and I like the side lighting on the tree. My only suggestion would be to tone down the magenta tones in the water.

Love the mossy greens Jared and the comp is spot on. Nice shadow detail too.

I can also see the magenta tones Ben has mentioned.

Gary.

Jared, the most appealing feature in this image is the awesome light. The fine greens are a real plus.

Best,

Great take on this falls Jared. I really like the large moss/fern covered log on the right.

Glad you enjoyed your time up here!

Jared,

I'm really enjoying the crisp details here and even the light emanating from above the falls. Maybe it's just me, but I'm kinda surprised no one has mentioned the darkness on the right? While I really like the contrast in the left half of the image, that dark chunk of real estate on the right throws the balance off for me. I don't see a crop solution because I like the flow of the stream towards the LRC. Is there any detail in there that can be brought out? Maybe I'm the only one, but it really takes away from what this image could really be.

Thanks for the critique Lon, that was actually my main concern with this photo. There is detail in that corner and in a print there's just enough of it to convey the look I was going for, though i did keep it rather dark (the histogram should show this). In this web presentation you're right that the corner just looks completely blocked up, im guessing much of it could be from web compression. I appreciate the honest critique-thanks again.

Very nice take on this location. I've now been here more than once and can say it is not an easy place to shoot something original. I think your very nice shot here is worth working it beyond the "original."

IMO, as far as processing: the image is very good enough to warrant (at a bare minimum) doing a custom white balance adjustment to get the white balance perfect and magenta cast out. Running it through "Color Balance" for highlights, mid tones and shadows in PS. Running a graduated adjustment from right to left (in the RAW converter) to pull more shadow detail out of the right side, and then maybe add a touch of highlight glow.

So happy to hear you enjoyed your trips to the PNW this Spring.

Another idyllic scene of the Gorge. The highlight details look really good, the comp is great. With the higher flow of water, having a little more texture there would do well to show it off; increase ss just a bit. Wish there was a little more detail in the heavy shadow area at the right, as it is a large spot to go black.
