Ancient myrtle, Tasmania

by Rob Blakers

A lovely old myrtle in rainforest on the aptly named Paradise Plains in NE Tasmania. Rainfall overnight and a brief puff of mist in the forest as the warm sunlight filtered beneath the canopy. In a few minutes it was all over - harsh contrasty light and the magic gone, although of course the tree itself was still there and remained a marvel!

Arca Swiss RM3di, Rodenstock 23mm, IQ180, 3 image focus stack.

Ethereal light and tack sharp—a good and useful combination. This photo sneaks up on you, and the thumbnail does not do it justice. The large image gives the best impression.

I would have to agree with Phil's comments. The larger image has more impact. Amazing tree and I like the composition.

The atmospherics here are fantastic, and I love the backlit forest scene. The old growth tree makes a geat subejct, and I love the plants growing on the tree limbs. Though your camera was likely level for this composition, the tree is visually leaning heavily to the left. I do wish it was more visually even. As is, I feel like the tree is about to fall out of the photo.

Nicely composed, great foggy mood and wonderful perspective - I think the slight lean adds to the tension/perspective impact especially since the background trees provide a counter balance.

That sure is one monster of a tree! I love all the ferns on its branches, and the atmosphere is indeed lovely. If you were so inclined I think you could emphasize the atmosphere even more by warming up the highlights relative to the tree.

What a majestic tree. Looks like it supports its own community of ferns.
