WC #538 - Time Flows On

A challenging theme this week! The week is almost over, and there are only three entries so far (not including mine). Even the theme's submitter hasn't posted an entry this week. I couldn't come up with a suitable entry either, given the description of the theme. So I thought I'd stretch the criteria a little.

My two photographs were taken slightly over two years apart, the first one on 11/8/2007 and the second one on 11/10/2009. In fact, I did also visit this exact location on approximately the same date in 2008, the year in between. But I distinctly remember the scene being not worth photographing that day because there was not much water flowing and the pool was completely obscured by fallen leaves. Personally, I feel that the latter photograph is the better of the two compositions for three reasons. First, the lighter branch just to the left of the large rock in the first photograph is a slight distraction to my eye ... it just doesn't seem to fit in well with the rest of the scene. This branch, as I recall, was still there in 2008, but had apparently been washed away by a flash flood at some point between then and the date of the second photograph in 2009. Secondly, in the second photograph, the new element of the lighter twigs or exposed roots under the water in the pool adds interest to the composition. Lastly, there is more water flowing over the small cascade in the second photograph, which also adds more appeal to this composition in my opinion.

Beautiful scene. I agree that the second image is much stronger for the reasons you mentioned.

Lovely little landscape scene you have found here. I really like both pictures but agree the second has more interest for the reasons you mentioned. I like how the roots in the large tree and also the roots under water mirror the cascading flow of the water. The fall leaves decorate the scene very nicely in both but I especially like the leaves on the rock in the middle of the cascading water in the second photo. The large tree, rocks, cascading water, and pool all fit together well to give a pleasing comp to this image. Very nicely done, Jim!

Very nice scene and I like the subtle changes in the second version. The roots add a lot and the light seems better as well.

Neat comparison. In this instance the differences are subtle, but as you indicate, you skipped the dry year. I too like the second post better, There's more color contrast with some red leaves and more saturated yellows, it seems like there may be more contrast overall (but that could be processing), the clarity in the pool is also better, and I especially like the red leaves on the plunge rock. They bring some additional interest to the falls itself.
