Virginia Dayflower - Commelina virginica (Spiderwort Family).
This is a new bloom, with the first of three blue petals on display. Early morning light.
F/14, 1/100th, ISO 400, 1D M3, Sigma 150mm + Kenko 1.4x & natural light.
Special thanx to David S. for help on the specific ID..

Nice sharp photo Howard, and I love that pure blue. I'm not sure of your ID though. I agree it is in the Commelinaceae family, but looks more like some kind of Commelina (Dayflower). Tradescantia have three petals and usually long strap-like leaves. There are several dayflowers in Texas and I'm certainly no authority on Texas wildflowers, but my guess is Commelina erecta.

There are some images of the Tradescantia humilis here.

and a page on Commelina here.

Howard - I very much doubt that this is a Spiderwort. Looks more like a Dayflower to me.

I really like the DOF covering front to back adequately.

Wow !!..David and I cross posted.

Here's another that may help with positive ID. It normally has up to three petals in full bloom. One's missing here, they're very fragile..
The "gard-nerd" shot it off with his water hose

Neat shots! I especially like the second one. I'm really attracted to the bright yellow against the dark blue.

Howard:
Not seen one of this before. Nice yellow and blue, supported by the dark bg. Like the drops in the repost even if missing one petal.

Howard, I like both images. I think I like the second one better because of the water drops and because it doesn't have "extra" (not extra to the plant, I know) leaves at the bottom.

An interesting and quite beautiful portrait of this great little flower. The second shot is even better me thinks.

Completely smitten with this flower, I've never seen it before. I like both images, maybe the 2nd one a little more.
