Winnipesaukee Spring

The view form Mount Major's summit in the Lake's Region of central NH is pretty sweet, but the crowds can be pretty thick up there. I figured I couldn't improve on what's out there for images, so I've neglected photographing it over the years. The peak is very accessible and normally difficult to avoid people in the shot. After looking online, I was surprised that there were few quality shots so I figured I'd give it a try. I spent an evening and morning up there this spring and found composing an image was more difficult than I thought. The mountains seem much closer than the view through a wide angle lens, so it does loose some impact. FG were a problem, as small trees often disrupted the view in all of the wrong places. I settled on a slight zoom using a 24-105L and stitching 4 shots taken vertically to help give the mountains more emphasis while still breaking up the green FG with some rock ledges. A diffused sunset helped the sky, but I was hoping for more- maybe next time!

ISO: 1250 to prevent tree blur in the wind; f16 4 image stitch
Amazingly very little noise easily corrected during the RAW conversion.

Great shot, Harry. Certainly reminds me of New England or the Adirondacks. I like the composition and think you did well in achieving what you waned from this site. It makes me remember some times on the lake visiting a great uncle and rides in his classic Chris Craft.

Nice scene Harry, reminds me of Lake George with all the islands. I empathize with you on finding comps on the mountains here in the northeast, it can be quite a tricky task. Nice job with the stitch.

Beautiful spot with great highlight and shadow detail,
looks like a nice place to pass a morning or evening.
I like it.

I think you did well here. Scenes like this are hard to pull of in a way that engages the viewer. The layering worked well, as has the lovely light hitting the elements just right.

Sweet sweeping view. Also like the warm tone in the foreground. I also agree that it is difficult to find a strong composition in eastern mountains. I went to Acadia NP last year and went to the top of the Cadillac Mountain during the golden hour. I did not take a single picture since I couldn't find any satisfying view at all.

Mountains? What mountains? Oh, those are mountains? Doesn't matter really. I think the comp and light are very good here. I really like the textures and balance of tonal variation.

I've never been north of the Mason-Dixon line, but this pretty well sums up my impression of what the NE must be like. I imagine a large print is called for with this shot. :toast:
