Caldera Storm

Evening snowstorms loom over Oregon's Crater Lake and its centerpiece, Wizard Island.

Made this image a couple evenings ago, believe it or not - they just got 8 fresh inches of snow there this week, which is why I decided to head down one last time before waiting for full-on summer conditions.

Due to the fine detail, I'd recommend viewing the larger 900px version. Even better, I've got a 1024px version on black here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/schmalpal/7279767806/lightbox/

Nikon D300 @ ISO 200
16-85mm Nikkor @ 16mm, f/11
Single 1/10 sec exposure

Alex, Great shot ! Is this a recent shot or was it taken back in the winter ? Is it a single exposure ? What were your settings and lens size ?

Thanks, Jack. This was taken two days ago. I added the tech specs to the description above for you. Single exposure.

Another great image showing the drama of this incredible landscape. I might find myself up here during the summer, don't know how much snow will still be there, but anyways...This is great. The larger version is a real treat. I bet this would look incredible as a large print.

A bit different take on the classic view. I really like this, especially the overall blue tones and the nice crisp snow. Nicely done

Alex, nice blue tones in the water against the the snow. I like your comp and the mood the image creates.

It's nice. The light and comp work well and I like the moodiness created by the low-hanging clouds.

Incredible image Alex. I like the way the tree branches at the bottom fit with the shore of the island. The fog being just above the opposite shore gives it proper depth. Well done!

Nice positioning to compose the shot and place the elements. The blues, blacks and overhanging clouds work very well to create the mood. Also, congrats on the daily earth shots selection.
