Anna's Hummingbird (Calypte anna)

Place: Gilbert Water Ranch, AZ
Date: December 30, 2011 5:02 pm
Equipment: Nikon D300, Nikkor AF-S 300/2.8, TC20E III (2x), Gitzo 1325, RRS BH55, Sidekick
Exposure: ISO 800, Aperture priority spot metered 1/640th at f/8
Raw, PS CS3 on Mac G4, 51% of frame
Not set up, not baited, no flash, no cloning

I just got around to processing this shot from last December. I like the late day light. I also like the splotches of color from the out of focus leaves and flowers (although I realize some viewers might think they make the image a bit busy).

As always: honest critiques requested; all comments appreciated. Larger image provided for critical viewing.

It is a clean around the bird so the background does not bother me. Might look to eliminate the leaf in the upper right as it seems detached and just hanging there.

Lovely color detail and lighting on this little guy...I agree the out of focus bits add tot he image, not detract, and the blue sets it all off!

I like the way the foliage creates framing for the bird. And I agree that the light is really fine. The blue makes for a pleasing contrast.

Nice light indeed! I like the comp and the DOF in this, it seems just right for this image.

Yes, beautiful light and detail, and beautiful colors. To me the OOF leaves and flowers are just the right varying amounts of OOF to be really complementary to the bird. I especially like the twig that leans to the right below the bird.
