Thunder light

Another image from the salt river. I really wanted to emphasize some drama as the sky looked as if it were ready to explode, so I processed this one a little more extensively than I normally would on a given image. The overall image itself is a vertical pano of nine horizontal images. I still don't know if I am completely happy with the processing here and I would appreciate some thoughts and suggestions.

Really sweet light. I like the way your composition leads the eye right up to the powerful sky. Fine image.

Really sweet light and nice take on the Bulldog Mtns! I like the way the mountains seem to pop out of the image and the dramatic clouds in the sky. Nice work!

Peter, the comp is really good and I think you have the beginnings of a great image. I personally would crop about 1/2 inch off the bottom(using the web size). To me the processing seems a bit off mainly in the sky and where the sky meets the mountain especially on the left side. It also looks light the highlights migh be blown and for my taste (and everybodys is different) I like a more natural looking sky in the blues.

I love the light in this. For some reason I thought of the song from ELO Fire on High...my eye is drawn to the center immediately and stays there, and then moves towards the green in the mid part of the shot. In a way, almost like the river doesn't exist. I do agree, the dark area at the bottom could be cropped.

This is awesome Peter. I really like the drama in the sky and the red tones on the mountain. As the others have suggested, I'd crop the bottom dark area out. The right side the water seems to have too much cyan, which doesn't seem to fit with the colors in the rest of the image. With a few slight modifications, I think you will have a winner here.

Digging this one more than the other two. Ridge looks a little strange though...did you dodge and burn or something there? Sky seems a bit over done...could be my monitor. Have not calibrated in a few months.

I like this one a lot Peter. The leading rapid line in the fg is excellent and I like the intensity of sky drama. I agree cropping up to the rapid line would be a nice option.

Incredible light. I would brighten on the foreground a little to bring out some golden reflections on water. Also agree with others about the sky.

Here is an edit with some of the suggestions. I took some off the bottom and brightened up the water a little more and added some contrast. I toned down the sky so it isn't too powerful and doesn't look too overprocessed (at least I hope). Also tried to make the ridges appear more natural. Let me know what you think and if there is anything else I can do to make it better.

Seems a bit heavy on the processing to me. The edit looks slight more overcooked than the earlier one IMO, but I can't see how adjusting the current file would fully solve these issues either. I would prefer some more natural lines and light. The focus seems to be overly dramatic and dodged to heavily toward center. The right side ridge appears haloed slightly. There's a slight shadow in the water under the main peak where the top side is brighter, so I might adjust that. A perspective involving more of the rocks and cascades up close might have worked better? Love the grasses though.

Thanks Marc, I have been torn apart by trying to figure out the best way to process this image in it's entirety. I intentionally went overboard with the processing to see if something might have come out of it. Luckily, the location isn't too far from home, so I will have a chance to go back over the summer to photograph the monsoons over the landscape. After looking at the image back at home I thought the same thing about getting closer to the cascades. Definitely going to work on something from here once I return from my trip.

I think you've got a really great shot somewhere in here, Peter. I see a bit of a brighter halo around the whole rock/sky edge, particularly on the rightmost third. Seeing how you used GNDs, it may be natural - but I would still probably find a way to darken that and bring it in line with the rest of the sky. The highlights are a bit too blown for my taste in the sky, and the blues are a bit dark/desaturated - just looks too contrasty to my eye. As far as composition goes, I know I wasn't at the scene, so I don't know what influenced your exact framing/position, but I would really like to see the rocky line in the water strike the lower-left of the frame, so it leads in better. As it is, there's not nearly as much going on in the foreground as there is in the top 2/3 of the image - maybe a vertical 4:5 crop would help here? At any rate, the reason I'm giving such detailed nitpicks is because I really like the potential this shot has. :)
