The king on his throne

I found this leopard in Chobe NP, Botswana. He was lying there very relaxed, his mother behind some bushes. I was so lucky to find them, without any tourist cars nearby. For half hour I could take all the shots i wanted, and the leopard didn't mind. it was like he was posing. I felt like the luckiest girl on earth... Then the tourists arrived and the leopards vanished into the bushes

I'm new at this site, so i probably did something wrong. my pic doesn't seem sharp here, but it's really sharp in real. can anyone tell me what i did wrong?

Carole, the sharpness looks fine to me, so I'm not sure what the issue is that you're dealing with. Perhaps the image exceeds the width limitations of the "posting space" and has been automatically shrunk.

It's a very nice portrait. The muted light and that background are great for this subject. About the only thing I'd prefer to see is a bit more space on the left side. It's a bit tight over there near the paw, especially compared to the empty space on the right side, so the balance of the image is thrown off a bit in my mind. This would also move the leopard to the right in the frame a bit, creating a nice diagonal spanning the lower left third (paw) to the upper right third (head and ears).

Welcome to NPN, Carole! What a great first post  !

Really awesome image! The detail looks fine to me. I love his pose, and him staring straight at you is just awesome. I also really like the DOF. The bokeh looks really nice.

Another thing I love about the image is that it looks like the Leopard has a little mohawk  ! I think that it adds some character to him  !

Great title for the image, too!

Hi Carole and welcome to NPN :wavey: . It sounds like you truly were the luckiest girl on earth that day! I love the relaxed pose here as well as the superb BG separation (Btw what aperture were you using here?). I agree with Max about the placement and allowing a bit more space on the left rather than the right, but that is minor. I don't fully understand your comment about the lack of sharpness; this small jpeg seems fine to me, but viewers will be able to better critique an image as well as appreciate it, if you also include a larger 1200 px version. When posting an image it is best to resize it to 720 px and then sharpen that small image as required. I am looking forward to more of your contributions to this gallery in the future.

A nice sly look from this big cat. . . I like the brown and greens but would like a touch more room on the left

Welcome to NPN. This is a great image. The cat is very well isolated from the background and really pops from the dark green. The color and detail are good and the eyes look very sharp to me.

Welcome Carole

Young cats are interesting to watch over time, in their Physical developments, as filling out and developing character in their Very Expressive Eyes. Seems quite relaxed, ( Not threatened by your quiet movements) And his mood relates well to a Very Pleasing portrait. Not much to suggest for improvement ... But if this was my Image(& you have the room) I would like a small amount of more room at the ends of his paws, So as Not so close to the border. What is your Crop ? Hanheld ?

Thanks for Sharing this Fine Image!!

Welcome here Carole...and what a lovely moment - it's awesome when you have these sightings for yourself.
I love the clean look here (no vegetation) and the stare with the great use of DOF. Soft light brought out all the detail you need. I do feel overall the image has a bit of a green cast to it and if it were mine I would warm up the WB slightly...

Thanks everyone for the warm welcome and nice comments! I agree, I should have left a little bit more space on the left. and after looking, I found another version! My crop is 1.3. About the green cast, it didn't look like that before I uploaded it. Next time I'll upload a larger version. Thank you all!! :wavey:

The horizontal spacing does look better in the repost, though I don't think it was necessary to crop more off the bottom. I like the slightly brighter tones in the first version as well.
