Nick:
Iris is a complex flower and present many possibilities. Your close up view is interesting. The darker left and right portions do not go together with the central part though. Perhaps a tighter crop of the central portion may make this more interesting.

Nick I agree with Gary a tighter crop on the center piece would make this photo pop.

Thanks for your comments. I've cropped the photo and re-posted it. The crop does put more emphasis on the central theme and provide a more intimate view. Any additional comments?

Nick, I think that the repost works better. Maybe the light was a bit too harsh.

Sigh... Iris is so beautiful and so difficult to photograph. I think the repost works much better, Nick. Also, very important to select a specimen in good condition. This one gives the impression it's fading, as the edges of the petals are brownish... I like the sparkles in the flower, but that also indicates pretty strong light. In that case, in the field, I'd try some shots with a diffuser panel and/or cpl.

Nick - Love the repost - good suggestion there from Gary. Iris is a fascinating flower with some intricate shapes/forms and it can be photographed in many different ways.
I like your composition and the excellent front to back DOF - I recommend using a small diffuser to even out the harsh light. I never photograph on a sunny day without a Diffuser.

The repost is a big improvement in the composition. I also find iris hard to shoot, you did a great job with a difficult subject. I really like the details in the throat. I also would suggest a diffuser, especially when working with white and yellow blooms. It definitely evens out the light.

Fine super close-up. Almost reminds me of one of those carnivorous plants. Color gradations work well.
