1st Place Winner - Environmental Photojournalism

Un-natural way

This Northern Gannet from Helgoland was looking for nest material but unfortunately only old fishing nets were found. This means great danger for chicks when they are young that they can get this nets around their legs and drop from the nest. The bird just started to land in the nest.
I was lucky with the light here, on the top of the hill only birds in the sky were still lighten from the sun and see behind was already in shadow.
Nikon D300, 70-200 2,8 lens at 200mm, f/4,0, 1/1000s and ISO 200.

Comments and suggestions are welcome.

Best regards, Gorazd

I absolutely love this shot. Having seen some of the same tragic encounters with fishing line, six pack rigs of plastic I am a supporter.

Wow, that's pretty sad :frown: . Really dramatic image you managed to capture here! I love the dark background, as it helps to make sure you keep your eye on the subject.

Wow, this is a remarkable shot! It's quite tragic that our beaches and other marine areas are littered with debris.

It has a certain abstract quality that could be interpreted in many ways. I first though that the birds was tangled up himself. Very interesting shot!

I'm getting in a little late on my comment. Trying to make sure I get to each of the gallery categories.

Really like the captured color. For some reason, my eye keeps going to the brown head of the bird. Some good detail seen here with shooting f/4. Curious as to what post processsing software you use and any special steps you took? Feel free to email if you desire.

Thank you all.
Rick all I did in post processing was adjusting sliders in histogram (that brings the contrast here) and some adjustments of color, sharpness... only basic things. For very dark background sun position is responsible. I had to underexpose for 1 stop and still to underexpose in software, to bring details from the bird. And i did this in Lightroom. I only use PS for special cases (one in 50 photos) and sometimes I use NX2, if I worked in difficult conditions and Lightroom doesn't do the job correctly. NX2 is still the best for RAW files but it is so slow that I use it only for specially demanding conversions.
