Bandon Reflections

by Scott Smorra

Sunset at Bandon Beach, Oregon, June 2011. We spent 4 days in Bandon and this was the only sunrise/sunset which wasn't completely smothered by the marine layer! No one ever said photography on the Oregon Coast was easy.

I was hoping for a bit of detail in the sea stacks, but the lens flare was so bad I just decided to let them go to black.

Any feedback you have on this one is appreciated.

This is beautiful Scott. I love the colors and light in this, and that reflection is awesome! I don't mind the sihouetted sea stacks at all. Beautiful sky and the water has such a cool look from front to back. This looks like it would make a beautiful and dramatic print to have hanging on the wall. Very nice.

I don't mind the silhouettes either. You know there isn't really much more visible detail in this kind of front lighting anyway. I think it looks "real" Beautiful soft warm tones too. Very nice. Had my first experience with Bandon this past fall. It's a special place.

This is beautiful, Scott. As usual with your work, this is a technically strong image with vibrant but also natural processing. This must have been a wonderful scene to behold - it feels very tranquil.

Beautiful image. The colors and reflections are outstanding. I think I'd have preferred a less centered comp, but this certainly is a very fine image.

I guess i may have to reinstate my Bandon Tax (i get 20$ for every Bandon shot posted  )
Well you certainly arent breaking any new ground here, but i like what you've done, its very well presented, and has a lot of icon appeal--would make a nice (long) postcard!

A very wonderful image Scott. I think the orientation of the horizon and central spire works well for this situation.

Beautiful sky and water, very symmetrical. IMO, the dark stacks are perfect for this scene, adding a strong vertical element to the horizontal composition. Very nicely done.

Great reflected colors in the sand/water and the sunstar works well to hold it all together. The silhouettes don't bother me a bit. Very nice take on Bandon.

Beautiful shot. Yeah it's an icon but it's worth it. The centered elements threw me off a little bit at first but I actually prefer the way you have it composed. The tones look perfect to me. I'm sure this would look great hanging above a sofa. Well done :toast:

black seastacks work fine for me... I like the natural look and your perfect control of the setting sun...

Looks great Scott. I like the wet sand and the reflection. This looks really "sweet". The silhouettes do a great job too. No nits, very smooth work here.

Perfect set up for me Scott. I love the light, and the reflection is beautiful. Perfect exposure/processing, the black doesn't bug me a bit here. (Got to hate the marine layer!)

The centering of the prominent sea stack, as well as the silhouette, works well here. Great colors, too.

I love the sweet light and compelling reflections. I do wish the tall seastack wasn't centered. I think if you crop off the left 20-30% or so the image works even better. Just my two cents, of course.
