Deep thirst

I shot this image on Sunday in the Addo National Park here in South Africa. A pack of 3 hyenas came to drink at first light. I like this image as to it shows how thirsty this Hyena must have been. The colors are really magic this time if the morning.

Nice light on the hyena & the closed eye seems to add to the feel of the image.

Hi Neal,

I like a lot of things about this image - the curled tongue, the strand of water, those raw ears (flea bitten or chewed on??), and the nice isolation of the subject from the background (tho' the out-of-focus zone directly behind the strand of water is a BIT "nervous" - likely due to the TC). I'm a little torn on the closed eye...part of me thinks it adds to the feeling of satisfaction the hyena is experiencing, and part of me wishes it was open. But overall a very interesting shot that captures a fleeting moment in time very well...

Love this image. Hyena are such an underappreciated African species. This really captures a feeling that these animals can have. The detail in the larger version is wonderful. I really enjoy this image a lot. Thanks for posting!
