This image was taken near Duluth the weekend before this past thanksgiving. A buddy and I met up with Joel Truckenbrod as we headed back to Bemidji after a weekend of winter camping when we decided to take a detour and explore some of the shoreline near Duluth, something I haven't really done before.

As the sun was setting, I was focusing a different composition facing the opposite direction and I hadn't even noticed the scene to my back. After I invested a substantial amount of time into my other image, I turned around and saw this. I immediately scrambled to get my gear and headed over to this scene.

I truly appreciate the critiques on my last image, thank you all!

Ben

5D II - 16-35 II @ 18mm
ISO 100 - f/16 - 0.6 seconds

I used two exposures for this image, one for the majority of the scene and another to pull some detail back into the shaded sections of the rocks.

I like the subtle repetition of diagonal lines (shoreline, wave, and clouds), a very nice image.

Ben, This is really nice! The light is beautiful and I especially like the highlighted ice. The wave on the right looks great and adds some nice balance as well. Great sky too! I haven't seen Joel for awhile but did look at a lot of his b/w images recently.
Nice work, Ben.

Very nice Benjamin, I love the ice encased rocks on the shore, and the way the light is highlighting them! The sky adds a lot as well. One small thing, it looks just a tad bit tilted down to the right.

Everything is nice here. Its the ice in the foreground that I find makes it even more interesting!

Beautiful image--love the ice covered rocks in FG, the lighting, and those soft, puffy clouds above!

the scene and the composition are just stunning Ben! I'm thinking just a little heavy on the red channel for my tastes.

Fastastic image...the shutter speed gives you good movement in the water. The clouds, I love those types of clouds. They have nice color and depth. The ice, a nice addition to a shoreline composition.

Outstanding image, Ben. That ice in the foreground really makes this image sing; and the light of course. Also like the pebbles in front of the rocks glowing in the light. Nice.

ben, the light is gorgeous and the scene nice. ... but ... to my eye, the really interesting elements here are those ice covered rocks. i'm hoping to see the next image with them as a prominent part of the FG?!?

Love the icy stones and the way they pick up the reflected blue sky to mingle hot and cold colours together. Really nicely depicted tidal surge too.

Thanks for all the feedback everyone!

Doug,

I've had problems with that before, actually, it's my monitor. Sometimes when I have images with deep reds in them, they show up in print, but not on my monitor. Given that my monitor is pushing 5-6 years old it's probably time to consider getting a new one that displays a much wider gamut of colors so I don't have this issue any longer.

The diagonal line of rocks in the foreground are beautiful Ben. The beautiful color in the sky and water motion are even more so beautiful
