Trying to save gas money for spring weather and landscape shots so nothing in the landscape area to share as of late. Spring storms are more photogenic than wind blasted brown and white high plains.

However, I'm an avid portrait photographer. Love the control you have over lighting with strobes. And I don't have to pay ridiculous gas prices to take photos of my wonderful wife in the basement. ;]

Never posted in the particular section..nice idea NPN.

Can't remember how many lights on this one..maybe 3 or 4, and a silver reflector below.

The soft light looks great on her skin. Wish I had a better grasp of lighting so I could try stuff like this!

Thanks guys.

Max, like any other study, a bit of reading and practice will get you headed in the right direction.

Best lighting book I ever read was: http://www.amazon.com/Light-Science-Introduction-Photographic-Lighting/dp/0240808193

HIGHLY recommended for anyone wanting to further understand the basic underlying principles and applications of light, both natural and artificial, in just about any type of photography. I use many of these practices in my landscape photography. Like they say, it's all about the light!

A lovely portrait, Nicolaus. Very nice indeed. While my avocation is outdoor photography (not necessarily nature photography), I too love portraiture. I currently earn my meager living making and selling portraits. These are rapid-fire production line products, in a studio that is not my own, with little control over lighting and none over camera settings. I do eight to ten sits a day with most of my time going to selling rather than photographing. On the other hand, the portraits I make in my own little studio on my own time don't pay for themselves, but are so much more satisfying.

I do appreciate your fine photograph here, your subject's posture and turn of the head, the Rembrandt lighting, and all the subtle things that went into making this portrait. Thanks for sharing this one with us. You inspire me to do better in my day job.

For those interested, I concur with Nicolaus' endorsement of the book Light Science and Magic

A very lovely portrait, Nicolaus. Nice pose and great lighting. My only nit, and a minor one, is the shadow of her nose: it's just a bit too dark, considering the lighting on the rest of her face. It's still a wonderfully done photograph.
