Picture from last fall. Red-tail Hawk with snake. Taken at Croton Point, NY. Wild bird not baited. Nikon D300s, 300mm f2.8 with 1.4tc. ISO-400, f5.6, Shutter 1/1250. Thanks, critique and comments appreciated. Ray

A nice clear image of the hawk. The D300s would do this at ISO 800 and give you the opportunity for the dof necessary to get at least the near wing and body in focus. I like the detail, position and comp. Better DOF would make this outstanding.

Nice image - sharp head and eye, less so elsewhere but still ok.

Certainly razor sharp where it needs to be, I'd be very happy to have taken this Ray, I don't mind the motion blur in the wings, well done. :toast:

Way to go, Ray. Excellent capture with plenty in the DOF to please me. It looks like it "should" look. This image doesn't ask for static wings IMO. The snake is priceless, as is the blood on the beak.

Ray,
I'm one that likes a little bit of wing blur when it's called for. Makes an image far less static looking so I think you have plenty of sharpness where it's needed. The exposure is perfect, and the head going through the wing does not bother me at all because you still see every detail....in fact it might even bring out the details more. Another nice image in this series going way back. :toast:

Very nice image of a RTH. The snake is the icing on the cake, so to speak. The wing blur is fine for me.

Be honest now. You have a captive red-tail with a rubber snake. Right? Just kidding!. Another great hawk with prey shot. I think I like this the best of the three you have posted but they are all good. Excellent sharpness where it's needed.

Thanks for all the critiques and comments. That rubber snake sounds like an idea Robert! I hate the live ones and if they aren't firmly in the grasp of a hawk I would go running!
