Whale Tail

Taken on a whale watch in Maui several years ago. Canon 5D with 24-135 IS lens. We were on a small Zodiac and the pod was swimming under us and breaching as they came up. As exciting now reviewing these pictures as I remember it when it actually was happening.

Nice shot of a great experience - the memory of the moment is one of my favorite things about photography.

Must have been awesome to witness Patricia. I quite like th elight and the atmosphere captured here. The tail and the spray make for an interesting capture of a breaching whale. The only thing that I find less pleasing is the composition; IMO all the empty space on the right should have been on the left instead. As is I would suggest to crop a bit from the right and much more from the bottom (maybe 1/4 of the height) to get a stronger comp.

I actually love the look of the ocean combined with the whale tail and spray (can't remember what you call it) in this image. So I would crop from the right but just a little from the bottom to try for a different composition to leave as much of the water as possible.
