Basking in the Glow

This is from the Kolob Canyons. The light up in this canyon can be very appealing. Solitude is surprisingly easy to have on this particular trail. Even on a beautiful warm autumn Saturday, I was on this trail for about five hours, and the only other people I saw the whole time was a man and his son passing by while I was photographing.

Good color and detail throughout, Jim, and well composed with fallen log
in a diagonal position.

It's a nice enough shot, particularly with the red background of the canyon wall and the nice leaf litter on the canyon floor. But it doesn't work as well for me as your other Zion autumn shots. I feel like this would work better cropped a bit from the bottom, possible to a 4x5 format. I'm also a bit distracted by the distortion in the upper part of the frame.

Nice shot, Jim. I completely agree with Phil, most of the interest for me lies in the top half of the shot. :wavey:

I love the autumn colors here and that red canyon wall is the perfect backdrop, Jim. While I like the fallen tree as a lead in line the image resonates with me more when it is cropped somewhat. Did you happen to shoot any horizontals of this scene, as I could also see that working. Just a couple of random thoughts.

Nice color. I was thinking of a crop and then read the previous posts. I would concur. I find the log at the bottom pulls my attention there and holds it.

I actually like the comp just fine, but feel the blues in the scene are more conflicting than contrasting with the warm tones. So warming the blues would be my suggestion for improvement. Regardless, I continue to like your take on the this park. So many good scenes.

Excellent image Jim! It seems like it could be a little warmer to me. The yellows look pretty bright already, but the reds are a little dark and I agree that the blue is a little too strong. I like the idea of the fallen log leading into the frame. For me, I like croping out roughly 20% of the bottom of the frame, leaving a little bit of the deadwood to anchor the bottom left. Thank you for posting this image!

Jim,

I really like the diversity of color here and the canyon wall makes for a great backdrop behind the autumn cottonwoods. Overall though, this is a little busy and "concentrated" if that makes any sense. It's almost like I want a broader view, but I can't quite put my finger on it. I actually like the lead-in properties of the log, just the canyon floor gets lost in all the small details.

Can't harp on all the nits too much though, it's still a lovely autumn image from Zion.
