Fern Fronds In A Row

Here is another image in my series of "scanner art." The fronds were placed directly on the glass bed of my scanner and scanned into a .tiff file for processing. I used Nik Software's Viveza to brighten the colors and Photoshop to clone out the many, many specks on the black background.

A simple composition that I think works well. Still working on this "scanner art" as it's definitely a challenge.

Thoughts, comments ... all are always greatly appreciated.

You're certainly making fast progress. This is excellent. Well composed and executed. My only very minor nit is the frond hitting the edge of the frame on the right.

Thanks Lorna and Scott, for your comments. I really do enjoy working with this process. Scott, I seem to have this hang-up of having the objects get too close to the edge, don't I. But stay with me and stay tuned for more images that don't get so close to the edge. Maybe I need new glasses. Anyway, thanks for taking a look and your thoughts. They are always appreciated very much.

This is an interesting arrangement and having some fronds overlap creates a very nice 3D effect. The lighting is very dramatic. How much of that is scanner and how much is processing?

Lovely, rich colors, and the lighting works really well with the colors.

Barbara: I'll just ditto Scott. I think in this image I would just clone away the tip of the frond on the left and then print it large. >=))>

Thanks everyone for your comments. Mark, the scanner I'm using is part of an HP All-In-One printer, copier and scanner so the scan quality is not the best. I am so new to this technique that I just wanted to see if I could even compose objects and this is the only scanner I have. The image scans pretty good, but I do use Viveza to bring out the texture and add brightness to the highlight areas and then use the contrast slider to darken the background. I'm sure the higher end scanners do a much better job on the original image, but I'm happy with what I've accomplished so far. I'll be working on more and will post them as I can. Thanks so much to everyone for taking the time to take a look and for your comments. And Bill, I love the idea of printing large ... I will do just that!

A very artistic rendition, Barbara. Keep experimenting with the scanner.

Another fine scanner shot from you, Barbara. I can tell you are enjoying this process and that's what it should be about, right? Love the sense of depth that scanned pictures have. I also like the natural colors and your arrangement. Ditto what others have said about the right frond needing more room. I love ferns (and have many) so I really appreciate this photo.

I really like the different bends in the ferns and the colors. Well done in my opinion.

Barbara I am not a fan of scanned photo but this an harmony of colors and shapes. I like the rhythm of the leaves. Splendid.
Take care.
