Why?

This is obviously not the classic, sweeping landscape. Instead, it is a "scene slice", a small portion of a grand location. Often, interesting designs live within those carved out portions, like a "Y". Nature leaves us with so many questions.

This is another take on the Paint Mines outside Calhan, Co. The late day light was cloudless and contrasty, so I selected a portion in the shade and processed to bring out the color and tones.

Sometimes interest can be found in those small slices of nature, and those less than opportune photo moments can be redeemed by observing the details.

Agree with the last statement. Good eye and processing. I would like to see just a bit more shadow.

Just because we don't know the immediate answer to the question, doesn't mean there isn't an answer. Looking forward to visiting this place someday. It looks fascinating.

Thanks Tony, your point is true in so many situations. This was intended to be both a picture and a metaphor, glad you "saw" it.

I think this has potential, but maybe a more focused crop with better 'printing'. The light and color here both seem a little flat.

Russ,

Why not? I find this quite fascinating. There is a certain amount of uncertainty of scale that keeps me engaged. I can't figure out if this is a micro-landscape or a "slice" of a bigger one. The colors and patterns are intriguing too and I like how the snow helps define those patterns. well seen and photographed.

Thanks Lon, it's the scale that has me thinking about how to photograph this on the next trip. This is fairly large in scale, but I was just thinking yesterday how this area is ripe for some close up studies. Actually, the grand vista would be hard to get - there's a power line that runs through the park at one end and trails line the place. But it has an infinite number of possibilities and I'm looking forward to working this one again, as it's fairly close and not too "overexposed". I need better light than what I had on this trip. It was way too contrasty. Some shadow, but not too much would be good. This was a definite compromise. I didn't shoot any brackets to blend either. Funny how in a new spot I just don't slow down and think things through. Still, it was a rich experience.
