Kingfisher at Bayport Pier, Florida

1/3200 at f6.3 and ISO 800 EC -1/3
Canon 500mm with 1.4 TC
Canon 7D

Finally. I have many many shots of clipped wings, empty sky, bare branches, wrong head turns, oof, and bad wing postions of these Kingfishers. Finally got one in the frame.

However it is a 20% crop.

great action shot, nice soft light, in larger version it has marks from high ISO post process :wavey: :toast: :wavey:

Nice pose, sharpness and light on the bird. I think the large crop combined with ISO 800 on the 7D has significantly reduced image quality. There's some banding of some kind in the background in front of and above the birds head.

These can be frustratingly difficult to capture. I like the pose and wing position. Appears to be some nice late afternoon light under the wing. There is quite a bit of noise and a spot under the beak which was missed on the larger post.

The crop is causing a little bit of pixelation, but I love the pose. He looks like a bullet. Not an easy photo to get as you have attested to. Sharp and an excellent background.

As already pointed out the large crop hurts IQ but nice job getting this action. Around where I live they are pretty easy to photograph but they won't let you get close enough for a really quality shot. Guess I may have to use a blind.

Scott, Great job getting one of these bullets in the frame. I like the pose and the sharpness but agree IQ suffers a little.

I like the action you managed on this Scott, but looks like it was a bit under-exposed. I see a lot of noise in the dark regions of the bird (not sure if that is from ISO 800 on the 7D or you trying to bring up out more detail in the dark areas. Based on how dark the clouds are and the lack of over-all light in the shot, I would guess the later. With that said, I still think it works and I would just be happy to get one with this good of focus in flight. Nice job using your skills!
