Yosemite Chronicles #5

Transitions. Image 5 in the series was captured not too much longer after the previous image. And thanks for the comments and honest critique!

Here was a small alder tree that had lost most of it's leaves... but not all. I was attracted to not only the solitary feeling of this last remnant of autumn, but the transition of seasons. In full disclosure, I did some landscaping and knocked snow off another leaf and branch in the bg, as well as some minor color cloning of another leaf located directly above an behind the main subject here. This was shot nearly wide open (that's f/11 on the 4x5) so the shallow depth of field was something I looking for and was envisioning this type of result. Unlike the previous image, I'm very happy with this image and is one of my favorites from the trip.

Thanks for looking and as always your honest comments and critiques are welcomed and appreciated.

4x5, V100F, Nikkor 300mm, f/11 @ 1/8

Thanks!

She's an absolute beauty, Lon. I love the color with the snow and the isolation you created with the selective focus. Wonderful detail on the large version. Gorgeous!

I'd be very happy with this too. The detail of the leaf is wonderful as well as the patterns of the oof branches. Very nice, Lon.

Wonder why this leaf is still hanging as most of the others have dropped. Nice detail in the leaf and the snow and an interesting oof back drop.

This is absolutely gorgeous Lon! Call me crazy but the leaf seems to asking a question. Wonderful DoF and excellent work.

Wow! I saw this after I had told you what some of my favorites of the group were. But I definately would have included it if I'd seen it before hand. This is so delicate, and artistic. I couldn't have envisioned this result from watching you capture it. This is really nice, and selective focus/dof perfection imo!

I'd just like to know how you even conceive an image like this, Lon. The concept and execution are excellent.

Lovely crisp details, Lon! This is the kind of shot I would have taken when I first got into photography that I have since forgotten about in my quest for big & grand scenes. Thank you for inspiring me to look for simple beauty like this again!

Beautiful Lon. Like the others I love the way you have separated the subject here. Simple and beautiful.

Wham! This is great. I love the snowy cap! The branch pattern is both intriguing and bothersome but weaves and interesting backdrop.

Lon,

A very unusual creative image, considering it was created in a camera designed for capturing tack sharp images throughout. Great impact driven by it's crushing simplicity.

Wow! this is just wonderful! Really excellent work on your part seeing this and capturing it. Your selective focus worked perfectly here just as you had visioned it. This has to be a new favorite of mine. Beautiful work Lon.

I like this. The leaf is nice, with great detail and texture, but what I really like is the "organized" chaos in the BG, caused by it being OOF.

I'm particularly intriqued by the bg. It's very busy but the shallow depth of field reduces it to a subtle tapestry of supporting lines and colors. The leaf, of course, is very nice but, IMO, it's the bg that showcases your skill and execution.

I like the "snowcap" on the leaf and the DOF you chose here, and the image tells the story of the changing seasons very nicely. No suggestions for changes or improvements.

Wonderful, Lon. Thanks for reminding me that you can also work with shallow DOF on the 4x5" ;)

This one tiny subject says so much about the transition from fall to winter. I like the way it's sort of suspended in a sea of bokeh, yet not so much that it becomes an abstract image. Nice, even light and natural colors.
