Last week was great to see my 3 year photographic journey come to life with my new printer. Zack Schnepf was a huge asset in working with me to teach me how to use my Epson 9900 printer.

Here is one more aurora image from my epic trip to the yukon last October 2011. This was a difficult image to process. It was a collaborative effort with the assistance of Zack. After his visit, my processing skills are much in tune to where my in field vision is.

My friend Colin was with me this evening while Marc was up on the peaks capturing his "aurora Icicle" image. Both Colin and I have similar compositions here. This is my version of what was an unforgettable evening. This ice was so slipery on this alpine frozen lake, I almost got a concussion when I slipped on the ice  After capturing this image, I just laid on my back on the ice and took in this light show. It was a special moment in my life that made me feel good to be alive.

Any comments and suggestions are always welcome.

Cool, James! The more i see these aurora shots the more i want to head up thatta way--maybe in the dead of Winter this year (just me an my trusty bottle of JD  )
The comp is nice, and the aurora is spectacular--great job on the sky especially.
Not to rain on this nice parade, but i have the same reaction with this shot that i have with 99% of the night shots like this--it still has that composite cut-n-paste look to it. Believe me, if i knew an easy way to overcome that id be selling my e-book on the subject right now--it may be the toughest challenge in Landscape Photography. And it may not even be worth it, cause many people (like buyers) may not even care. I have some ideas, but they're too lengthy to expound on here, if you're interested ill shoot you a PM. :wavey:

Looks killer to me James! You know I prefer the more up close foregrounds, but that is not for everyone. Processing looks spectacular here. Glad you got some good time in with Zack my friend.

Stan, Thank you for your comments. I tried the best I could to keep this aurora presentation as "photo realistic" as the experience was while being there. Anyway you cut it, the capture of the sky was in the exact same place as the capture of the foreground and background mountain cirque. I did capture the sky with my Nikon 3Ds at ISO 6400 at 2 seconds. I did this to get the unique detail that is different than most aurora images you see out there. The aurora is very dynamic and can change quite fast. The blend was handled in a way that prints exceptionally well. I have printed this at 20x30 an it looks great!!

I hear where you are coming from, but with today's technology, this is what is possible with aurora photography. If you were there, you would feel the same

Thanks Koveh, shooting at F2.8, with 2 focus blends were enough! I will leave the "houdini" magic to Marc.

John, you are 100% right, this is a must on the "Bucket List" !! I was there for 13 days in below freezing temperatures sleeping in a tent. I had frozen feet for all 13 days. I would go back and do it again in a heart beat!!

Love the POV, curve of the mountains, color, exposure, details, and smooth light of the aurora. Killer image! :toast:

Spectacular. I'm always impressed with aurora shots and this is no different. I love the vibrant greens and the nice detail in the foreground, peaks, and sky. Even at such a high ISO this looks very very clean. Great representation of one of the skies greatest shows.

James,

For someone who has yet to experience an Aurora, these images will and will continue to fascinate and engage me. This one is no exception. Not withstanding the techniques to capture these night images, this is just fantastic.

Awesome and mesmerizing. What an experience that must have been. I see what Stan referred to as the cut and paste look, but I don't care. I could still see this printed big on my wall. Besides the great sky, I like the sharpness of the peaks. I got to see my second Aurora this fall in Alaska, but it was nothing like this. Thank you for sharing.

Wonderful shot James, processing looks spot on to me...I've only ever seen the aurora once here in the Adirondacks, and that was many years ago and of course I had no camera with me :frown: Now that we are coming into the peak of solar activity again (2012-2013) hopefully it will produce some more good auroras here in the lower 48.. :toast:

Must admit, I do come in on the cut and paste side of the argument. The foreground is too bright IMO and distracts from both the mystery and majesty of the Aurora.

David,
thank you for your comments, but being that you live in the MWT, you must know that the aurora can change in brightness quite quickly. During this photo shoot, the aurora was BOOMING!!! I could have read a book under the light, The aurora was all over the sky. The file you see is set up for printing. This image prints very well with the foreground light slightly less bright then on web. The other problem here is that everyone has their monitors set a different brightnesses. That is why it is difficult to see an accurate web presentation  As for the "cut and paste" feel, maybe the overall brightness of the mountains give it that feel, but as you can see, it is matter of opinion

This has to be one of my favourite landscape images seen here on NPN since joining, and that says a lot cause there's a lot of jaw-dropping landscape photography being posted and critiqued here... :toast:

I love Aurora shots to begin with...and yours just really engages me...great comp and exposure and PP to make it a "wish I was there" shot (isn't that the point of landscape photography in the end? )
