One More Before I Go

On my way out of the Zion Narrows. I was teaching with Aperture Academy so didn't have much opportunity for getting my own shots, but I snuck in a few including this one. It was raining and even sleeting a bit during most of the hike and by this time my lens kept fogging up. I took a shot and the top half was misty. I took another shot and the bottom half was misty. So I blended the two. Still a bit of an Ortonish look, but I really like it. Would love to know your thoughts. Thanks for having a look!

I really like the comp with the foreground rocks framing the water and the soft light and soft water go together beautifully.

I tend to like the soft look this image has. The mood it creates is great, especially in overcast days. I also really like the water. The motion the image depicts is perfect. Not too silky, but not too 'grainy'... I'm no pro, but IMO, the top right seems a bit empty, leaving me to wish the yellow trees in the middle were placed a bit more to the right? Perhaps if you had shifted a bit to the right and pointed the camera a bit left? Anyways, that's my two cents here! The thumbnail definitely caught my I with the colors and flowing water. I'm glad you had a bit of time to grab a few photos while you were there!

Jean,

A beautiful take-away from the Narrows. I mentioned earlier that we've seen our share of images from here at this time of year, but I never tire of seeing them; especially since I've never been myself. Your image is beautifully composed and executed. Great job making the best image out of what your equipment was letting you do at the time. The result is fabulous. No nits or suggestions.

Thank you Tony and Nathan for your comments.

Nathan, this really was a grab shot as I had a large group of people to my right crossing the river, which I also needed to do. I could have set up in the river, but there wasn't time and that would have created a completely different image. I really wanted the curve of the river around the rocks with the tree and the water pouring over the boulder in the river at center right. Guess I'll just have to go back for a few more comps!

Nice comp Jean, the soft water combined with the orton type effect from the foggy lens work well together.

Wonderful Jean, I shot this same spot except mine was on a clear day and I was in the middle of the stream. It's really interesting to see how different it looks in these conditions, well done

You made very good use of the cloudy/rainy/sleety conditions within the narrows. The overcast conditions place added emphasis on the river itself --- which makes this different from other photos within the narrows.

I love the way you framed this scene, but don't really care for the softness at the top. I do however, enjoy this type of lighting. Very nice.

I like this quite a bit, Jean! The colors are just right, and the soft light really works here.

The water motion adds a strong leading line in this one Jean. Great mood overall.
