This image was shot handheld off the WhitePass Railroad train while moving. Nikon D700, ISO 800, 1/2500 second, Nikon 70-300 f4.5 - 5.6 VR, using "active" VR, circular polarizer.

Would welcome full critique

I have been to Alaska several times in the 1980's and really appreciate the image Andy. Nice image of Alaska's stark beauty.

very cool. FRESH is the word i would think first.

i might have tried a few long exposures on the water to see if i could soften the reflections. thats about the only thing i can think of! :toast:

Such a beautiful place, Alaska. It always seems so grand. Blues seem very intense there, but they add some interesting pop to the image.

Great composition, Andy, and I really congratulate you on pulling this off from a moving train. A one shot deal no doubt. I like how the lake shore on the right and the little cove in back pull the eye back to those grand mountains. Nicely done.

This turned out quite good, especially considering the conditions it was shot under! If you raised the bottom of the lumination curve just a bit it would pull some detail out of the trees and make it even nicer IMHO. Nice shot, Andy!

Thank you folks for the nice comments. On the "constructive critique" side:

Navin: Would have loved to have tried long exposure shots here. Would have loved to have found a way to even get up there :-). This was shot riding the "White Pass" railroad, which is a "tourist" train that goes from Skagway up through the "White Pass" into the Canadian Yukon. The Train moved along at probably 25-25 mph. No stops. There was just scene after scene after scene like this. Breathtaking.

Tony: Thanks. I am intrigued by your remark about the blues. Do you think the blues in my image are o.k., or would you recommend some kind of post-processing?

Gary: Thank you for the suggestion. Can you clarify exactly what you mean by "raising the bottom of the lumination curve?" How would you go about doing that? Is it something I would need to do in the LAB color space? Thanks.

Andy, considering that this was shot from a train moving (at least 25 MPH), it's almost impossible to consider criticizing the composition. I'm not inclined to criticize it regardless, to be honest; I rather like it just the way it is. The reflection of the sky in the lower right portion of the frame holds more than enough interest, IMO, to keep it from being empty space.

At the risk of speaking for Gary (and I hope he'll correct me if I'm wrong), I think he's simply suggesting a targeted curves adjustment of the deep shadows. I agree that a bit more detail in that area might make the image even stronger. There are several different ways I can think of to go about making this kind of an exposure tweak. E-mail if you're interested.
