Figure i better kick things off and prepare you for the upcoming onslaught of Zion images--'tis the season! I just got back from a long weekend there, got there too late to join the RMNP crew in the Subway so i opted to hike the Narrows; this was my second time and it was even more fun than the last time, such a fabulous hike! I left around noon, and by 4 pm i pretty much had the canyon to myself, went up about a mile or so beyond Orderville. This was one of my fav shots of the day, I wanted to give a sense of the strong flow downstream along with the great fall colors, so i indulged my temptations and went for the bold and colorful look here. This is a 3 image stitch, and examining it at full size im pretty confident i can print it up to 48X60 with full detail  . Hope you like, more Zion to come!
PLEASE VIEW BIG!

Stan, I like this a lot! Good exposure along w/ movement in the water. For some reason my brain does want to see the entire rock at the bottom, but it's a very minor nit.

Great comp and colors, Stan. It captures the essence of this place very well.

This is about the first Zion image of the season. This image makes it look the colors were about peak when you were there. What's the color status?

Love the way you captured the flow of the water here Stan, it was the first thing I noticed. I might burn down the highlights a bit on the canyon wall at the top center, but that's very minor. Wonderful detail you captured here, I'm sure this will look great in a large print! Looking forward to your onslaught!

Hey Stan, This is fantastic! What a beautiful view you showed us here, and I'm really enjoying this comp. I think the color looks wonderful and the detail looks great, especially the large version. Awesome shot! Would love to see that large print of this if you do it!
Talking about large prints...I'm just taking a break from setting up my new Canon iPF 8300 44" printer! 487# of stuff and it is huge! Don't know how long it will take me to get everything going, but will be glad when I get it set up. Good thing I know how to read instructions! My 7800 looks kind of small now

Superb capture and details! Everything about this is just right! The water looks just right and that is the hardest part to capture and give great details.

Man would I love to see that print. Comp is spot on, and I love the blue in the water (although maybe a tad less in that area just to the left of the main rock??) contrasting with the warm canyon and trees. I'll look forward to more from your trip!

(Oh, and thanks for the reminder in my photo's thread that I _don't_ have a tilt/shift   )

Spot on comp. like John commented. Details and processing look great too. Maybe the highlights are a tad too bright however.

And yeah, what's about that fg rock, man? How generic...

Wonderful shot, Stan. I love the 3D look of the foreground with the great contrast and clarity. This must be wonderful taken with this awesome lens and then even being composed by three shots. Oh yeah ... I'm also into the blue of the water, but if you know my images that's no surprise ;)

I like the low perspective and the overall clarity. I do wish the FG rock was fully exposed and not cut off though. Beautiful color in the BG.

I would also like to see all of the rock and all of the "eyebrow" on the back wall, but I wasn't there, so I don't know what was below and above that might have prevented that. Outstanding color, other than the blue to the left of the foreground rock, and processing. The lines all carry my eye around the bend and make me wonder, "Hey, what's back there?" Beautiful work as always, Stan! :toast:

Thanks, folks! sorry for the delay responding:

Scott: colors are actually way behind (1-2 weeks) in ZIon, but fortunately the maples were peaking, and that's what i had planned on.

About the rock  I really didnt want to include it, but i needed something to keep my tripod from being carried downstream! Besides, it aint that big and it aint blocking anything, and it does point downstream. I don't really care for the cut off top either but it was unavoidable cause the sky (which would have been a distraction) was just off frame here. Thanks for all the comments!

Stan, I love this shot! The water motion gave me vertigo when I first opened it. Great composition, and I don't mind the missing part of the rock at all.

Although it could use a little something..... yep you guessed it, cyan!

I'm ready for the onslaught Stan and a great opening shot to kick it off. Flawless composition making the view up this section of the narrows very inviting indeed. I'll look forward to seeing more.

Gary.

Hi Stan, you won't be lonely submitting your Zion images for long... at any rate, i love the comp. Strong shadow detail in the half tube on the right, and I love the foreground rock which anchors the image quite well. Nice little pop of reds in there too. Personally, I think I would prefer the distant sandstone wall to be darkened a bit to excentuate the stunning foilage and Virgin River. Right now, that wall just takes my eye away from the goods.

Excellent depth and strong lines leading up the river as evidenced by the subtle reflection. The cyan in the LRC bothers me a bit (even it is natural) as does the sandstone arch (or whatever you technically call it) cut off at the top of the picture. Overall, I think you did an excellent job at processing with strong contrast and color in the shadow detail.

Hey Stan. I know I've been absent from the galleries for awhile. I've been viewing (always), but not posting images or commenting. So I hope you don't mind if I ride your coattails, and jump on the Zion bandwagon. I've been here for a couple of weeks, mostly up in east Zion and some in the Kolob. I'll be here for another week. I'm not doing the Subway hike this year. I may go up to the Narrows one day next week.

This is an excellent composition from the Narrows. To complement your intent to give a strong sense of the flow downstream, I really like the sense I feel of being drawn upstream around the bend wanting to see more of the beauty. I don't mind the cut-off rock at the bottom. My only nit, as others have mentioned, is the hot spot on the canyon wall at the top. But otherwise, a great image!
