Ragged Apparition

I had one day off during peak leave colors this year, so even though it looked like it would rain all day i just had to take a trip out to the mountains to see what i could see. I thought that would be mostly clouds and rain, but fortunately there was at least a bit of clearing as I slid over muddy Kebler Pass and on to McClure Pass Southwest of Aspen. This was taken looking east to the Raggeds Range just before i entered a big fog bank.

Lovely, Stan! I made it to Kebler Pass but not to McClure. I like the fog, particularly
amidst the trees. Well composed with good even light. Other than perhaps considering
cropping out some of the sky at the top, I have no suggestions for
changes. Such a crop might infringe upon the "rule of thirds". Nevertheless, this is a winner.

Nice!! Love the color contrast, and the fog bank is placed perfectly to create an illusion of detachment between the mountains and the hills. One of your best from this autumn (so far).

Great moment captured really well Stan. Looks like you caught the last of a scene that passes all too fast. Nice FG texture and MG detail. The peaks are the "icing" on the cake.

The colors are beautiful Stan and their contrast with the snow covered mountain and clouds is simply stunning.

Stan, I like the contrast between the autumn color and the virtually monochromatic look of the mountain / clouds. The subtle detail in the clouds adds a lot of interest as well.

This works really well Stan, and i like it alot. The bit of clearing was just what you need here. Like John, I really like how the mountains and fall colored hills are seperated by the fog bank.

I agree with cropping some of the sky...

The soft light is gorgeous, Stan, I really like the separation of bg mtns and fg colors caused by the fog, well done :toast:

Stan, there's too much sky in this one!! It's almost 30% of the image. On my calibrated monitor, there's just barely enough definition in the sky to make this one pass. Even with a perfectly calibrated monitor I still think there's too much sky. Otherwise this one is perfect! Hey I'm just gettin started with my critique, but I'm trying to pick up from the best, like you.

BTW, let me know if you are interested in a quick trip to Zion next weekend!!!

Beautiful, Stan. All you're missing is a big 'ol foreground rock to hold this bad boy together! Maybe next year?

Incredible image, Stan. The receding layers of the foreground forest lead the eye back through an autumn tapestry to those majestic mountains. Wouldn't change a thing. Amazing.

Thanks folks!
I totally understand the suggestion to crop some sky--it would improve the balance, but i like the aspect ratio here so i think ill keep it, even if it constitutes 'negative space' i think it helps promote the idea that the mountain is floating in space (you need space for the mtn to float!) But ill leave that option open.

I think the composition is really nice Stan. The background is high contrast and the foreground and mid-ground areas of the image you were able to keep the contrast without sacrificing any shadow detail, which is tricky. Overall, I think I would prefer a little less contrast in the mountain and fog and I don't mind the sky, except for the URC where there is virtually nothing going on. I think you could at least introduce some vignetting in the corners. Overall, I think you have done a great job processing this image and the color balance looks spot on.

Beautiful. The peaks really stand out with their dusting of snow. The fog adds the extra something to make this 'fall in the Rockies' image unique and interesting. Very nice

Pretty shot Stan. The color is great, and the fog adds a sense of mystery to the peak. No nits from me.

The combo of layers and fall colors is a winner. I like Michael's idea. I think that a touch of vignette would subtly force the eye back to the center and keep it from wandering out the corners.

I could play with a vignette and see what that does. I purposely kept the top a bit contrasty/high key cause that's exactly how it looked to me. Thanks! :wavey:

Put me on the crop bandwagon, even if you already negated it. Sweet scene!

If you want the mountain to flow, make the foggy area below it larger.

Beautiful layered shot, Stan. I think the overcast light was a big plus for the scene. I would keep the composition as is.

The fog in the middle really makes this shot unique for me. I love this time of year when the snow dusts the mountains instead of sealing them completely. A wonderful image from your day off!

Very natural looking scene Stan. If it were mine I would be tempted to crop some of the sky but understand that you don't want to lose the aspect ratio.

The mountain range appears to be literally floating about the ground. Love the effect created by the fog and how you incorporated that into this composition.
