Icy Fall

I posted this on the RMNP forum a few days ago and I thought it would be nice to post it here, too. I had a pretty nice fall in Colorado with zero car crashes! The weather was spectacular and crazy all at once. Lots of snow and cold weather basically killed off most of the color in the San Juans, but also brought some unique shooting conditions. It was definitely better than my recent trips in the fall in terms of a nice variety of fall elements to shoot. My camera got a little too wet during the epic snow storm and refused to power up until I got back home to San Diego. I was still able to shoot for a few days after the loss by borrowing fellow NPN'ers Jody Grigg and Bryan Pezman's backup camera bodies. Thanks guys.

I hope to have a few more to post here shortly, as well as an update to my website.

Image specs: Canon 1dmk3, 90mm TS-E. Two image stitch.

Hey, I saw this over on RMNP, and I really liked it. Still do! Very nice one, I wish I had one like it!

Any autumn without a car crash is good! Lovely image. Love the warm/cool effect. Wish the leaf was just a little further to the right, but that's minor. Very nice work.

That's really nice, Jimmy. This feels like it's out of a fairy tale. The colors and textures feel very animated.

Excellent ice patterns, and what a unique leaf to provide the wonderful contrast. No suggestions at all here.

I like the way all the details in the ice are arranged, but I'm not so sure about the placement of the leaf. All beautiful one way or another though!

Oh man, this is fantastic! I absolutely love images like this.. and this is perfect! Only nit is that I would have placed the leaf a little more off center (well, closer to rule of thirds) I think. Well done.

Thanks guys. About the placement of the leaf...I didn't place this leaf at all. It is how I found it. Part of the leaf is embedded in the ice a bit... well, probably more like stuck to it. I am sure I can crop it to find that perfect placement if I so chose. Any suggestions would be appreciated. I plan on getting this printed to about 30x30 within the next week or so.

Commented on this in RMNP forum. I'll say it again Jimmy...this is fine art photography at it's finest! It should be printed large and hung in a prominent place! :toast: :toast: :toast:

Hi Jimmy - this is a beautiful image. The patterns in the ice are just spectacular and I really like the colors. I could see adding a tiny bit more contrast to the leaf, but otherwise, I really like this.

This is a beautiful image indeed. I love the frozen ice and the leaf adds such a nice touch to this. If it was mine, I might try to add a tad more mid-tone contrast, but that is personal taste. Lovely work!

The colors and design are excellent Jimmy. It must have gotten pretty cold to form the ice. Awesome midrange shot! Glad you're still with us.

So cool. The leaf is so crisp being embedded in the ice. While all of the ice is very captivating, a tighter crop might give the leaf a little more emphasis. :toast:

Well, the subject certainly aint new (i justy saw it in Kurt B's avatar, lol!) but i really like the presentation here--the ice bubbles add a lot. I might for a little less blue--personal preference! Nice!

I might be late in seeing this one, but I am so glad that I didn't miss it. What an outstanding image. Love the composition, color and light. The high values, especially, are lovely.
