505 - Melting Down

This is the Tsaina River gorge, about 37 miles NE of Valdez, Alaska (taken from the same place as my last post only in the early spring and zoomed in to the far end). Once again, the dynamic range of the scene was far too broad to capture it in a single exposure so I set up the tripod on the cliff edge and shot 6 stepped exposures for an HDR blend. As in the last one, this is a blend done with an averaging algorithm in Paintshop Pro. It is not a tone mapped HDR.

It never fails to amaze me that it's possible to take 6 seperate exposures (touching the camera to adjust the shutter speed for each exposure)and still end up with this level of definition and clarity!

Gary,

Looks like you've got a great place to return to frequently. I recognized it from your first post, well suspected ...I like the way the water is flowing beneath the blanket of snow. Thanks for sharing.

I like this HDR much better. It did a nice job on this fine capture.
Good lines, good texture, nice contrast' good leading line and DOF.

The processing does not "look HDRish". I like the stream popping out from under the snow and the green color of the water. In spite of the sunshine and the signs of spring, this does look cold.

I like the tele-comp in this one and the blend seems more natural than the last one. Alaska has it all and you are showing a really nice part of it with this shot.

Good job with the blending on this one, Gary. I see lots of really nice details in both the highlights and the shadows... and the midtone contrast seems to be just right. The color in the water really draws my eye. Gorgeous! I love the composition, too.
