a friend grows these beautiful flowers and I thought I'd take a "shot" at photographing one.

Allen, the colors in this image are gorgeous and I like the black background, but I just find myself wishing that those few petals were not cut off.

Allen:
I had the same thoughts as Carol. Also, I was wondering about which camera/lens/settings you used to achieve this.

Is this a cut-out shot? I like that clean black background.

Varina,

I'm not sure what you mean by a cut out shot. The flower was in a vase and I shot it against a white background. I filled in the white background with black in PS. I liked the contrast of the flower against black as opposed to white.

Thanks for looking and commenting.

I agree: the colors really are beautiful here, Allen. One way of circumventing both the snipped petals and the "cut-out" look is to do a closer crop: no bg and all outside petals (or at least the vast majority) snipped. Just a thought. Anyway, lovely shot regardless.
