Taken this photo of an Eastern Phoebe back in March when I first got my 7D.

Canon 7D, 100-400L @ 400mm, 1/320sec, AP, f8, iso500, Handheld.

C&C welcome.

Dave

Sweet, Dave. I love the pose and what I'd guess is nesting material in the beak. Excellent lighting and bg. I think I'd run some noise reduction on the bg.

Nice pose and setting. A bit over-sharpened IMO.

Great little bird, nice pose, and interesting "crumbs."
The large version has quite a bit of noise, and is fairly soft - likely a large crop - maybe more than the pixels can handle.
I don't know the canon 100-400's, but most lenses are not very sharp at the longest zoom. Pulling back 10-20mm has made a big difference in sharpness for me.

I like the overall comp David. I see the BG noise and would run some NR if this were mine. The bird does look a bit over sharp. I suggest backing off on the crop a bit and applying less sharpening. I think the IQ would be improved.

Yes, I forgot to mention is was a heavy crop, took out about 80% of image. These little critters are hard to get close too, so I got what I got.
I did as suggested, reduced noise and hardly any sharpening at all, only about 20% in CS5. I also tried to bring out eye detail a little more.
Thanks for your input.

Nice pose and good light on the bird David. I think it helped to pull back on your crop in the repost.

The repost is a considerable improvement, Dave. These little flycatchers are usually pretty confiding. I've had Black Phoebes hwk bugs from my telephoto lens...
