Over the Edge

It's amazing how much things change in just a few weeks.... Having seen Joe and Alex's recent images from this place, I was expecting to see remnants of snowpack when I got to this particular area of Glacier NP. The snow had melted....which was fortunate for the composition that I was looking to capture.

4 images shot horizontally at 14mm (3 for the final vertical pano and one for the foreground rock...which was about 5" from the lens).

On our last day there, going-to-the-sun had closed...and the snows moved in to welcome this place back to winter...

C&C welcomed...and always appreciated!

Note: I think that the included larger version does a bit more justice to the blacks in the image... Thanks for looking!

Robert

Jeez dude! That is sweet. How in the world do you merge 14mm shots though? It sure was worth the extra work though. Love the perspective. :toast: I'm ready for some chilly weather, one week!

Absolutely wild - love it. Especially like how you can see the texture and detail of the rock through the waterfall.

Wow... I greatly admire your image...
But, the process by which you executed it is even more impressive...
This is why I'm here...
to see images like this one...
Congratulations on a great shot...

Hey Robert,
The comp is very intriguing and I might actually prefer this to the other comps Ive seen from here. The vertigo aspect is really amazing and fits the scene perfectly. Nice work

Excellent perspective and great processing job....Let see some more from GNP.

I hope to be there next Sep-Oct...
Thanks

What a dramatic angle, very creative. This has to be one of the nicest shots I've seen from triple falls. I thought this spot was off limits, or is it only certain times of the year?

Wait..... What day was this? Were you in an orange coat, or with a guy in an Orange coat? I think I was up here when you shot this. REALLY great work here

Wow! Robert, this is really something. The perspective is just nuts and I love the composition. My only nit is the edge of the foreground rock is a tad too bright and draws my eye: A bit of a burn down would fix that easily.

Very nicely done!

Robert, this might very well be the best shot I have ever seen from this place! Just sweet!

The only thing I see that could be improved (at least on my monitor and in my eye) is the sharpness. I think careful fine sharpening locally could improve the web presentation.

Having said that, this really kicks tail!!! :toast:

As far as merging 14mm shots... I do this too. The software has really come along these days.

The comp, color and processing here is top notch. A stunning photo. My only nit pick that my eye immediately picked up is the slight u-shaped field curvature at the top 3rd of the image. That's what happens though when you tilt a 14mm. Tough to correct. Hell, maybe I'm smokin something funny here, Great shot!

What a great perspective and composition. I like how the water carries you over and through the box to the distant peaks to give a great viewer flow. I notice a dark halo on the water next to the right edge of the foreground rock.

Ohhhh BAY-beee, whatta shot! I feel like that water is going to suck me right in like a rip tide. And the light and tone is so eerie and rich, man, this works. Bravo!

Ah... my wife just saw this over my shoulder and said "Ooooo, I'd like to have THAT in a print." Hmmm, Christmas on the way, I might be DM'ing you Robert...

Beautiful composition, weather, and colors; though, the whole image is more contrasty than what would be my preference.

Wow this one has a lot going for it.

The light, the sky, the strong comp, the subject,….

The shutter speed on the water is perfect. The water looks so real at the edge of the falls. I like this a lot. The small version does look a bit soft.

Absolutetly! I love everything about this ! The color, tone, motion, texture ,and dynamic perspective. However, I'm a bit perplexed at the lower part of the photo being as bright, or brighter than the sky. I like the effect, but I wonder what might be done by lowering the foreground to mid tones? To each his own...this is stunning, and agin, I love it! :toast:

Thank you all for your comments and thoughts on this one! Seriously...the feedback and ideas that come from this site are really fantastic.

@ Miles - I was the one in the black jacket...out there with a good friend of mine Shawn (in the orange jacket)! We talked for a while at the top of the falls... Bizarre...but great to meet you and to talk with you for a few minutes out there! We probably should've taken the time to ask each other's names...I suppose that I was pretty consumed with capturing this shot! Marcellini and I had a great conversation about your work a while back...he and I will be sharing stories and catching up in a week when we meet up in Iceland...I'll be sure to mention our encounter!

@ Preston - I'd taken that edge down a bit already...but may just do so a little more. Great input...and a sincere thanks!

@Zack - The area was closed for most of this year (due to a late thaw/melt and the need to give the flora a chance to dig in for the summer). The area was officially open when we were there...else we certainly wouldn't have gone off the trail...

Again, thank you all...

Robert,

This is fantastic- the best I've seen from there. Great choice to shoot low and wide. I'd be curious to know what software you used to stitch the 14mm images? There is almost no distortion. You did a fantastic job!

An outstanding photograph, Robert. The perspective is striking as several others have already mentioned. What I love about this is overall mood, much of which is the result of both the weather conditions and your post-processing.

Very dynamic comp. Love the close perspective of the falls coming in from the right making my eye "fall" into the shot.. wonderful depth created there. The processing is excellent, albeit a little hdr-heavy for my tastes. A cracking image all the same.

Sublime work here Robert! Fantastic perspective, depth, light and processing! The 14mm-stitch certainly induced some distortion but I quite like it

The larger version is a must-view, can imagine this will look awesome printed REAL big...

Great choice for a view point Robert with the near water gushing over the ledge and the gorge leading us upto the distant hills.
