Western Meadowlark
by Dennis Plank
From Zumwalt Prairie Preserve in NE Oregon (near the towns of Enterprise and Joseph). I went their for raptors, since there is supposed to be a very high breeding density, but they must have already dispersed. I saw some, but certainly nothing unusual (and all very skittish). I was about to call that part of my trip a bust when this Meadowlark decided to cooperate. He perched on a post as well, but I liked the line of the wire. Not sure if I should have rotated it a bit or not.
1DMkIV, 500mm f4 ISL + 1.4TC, hand held from truck window with beanbag. f9, 1/1600, iso 640, Av mode with no compensation, normal processing in CS4 and cropped to 6.2MP. Taken September 11th at 5:42 pm.
I always appreciate your comments and criticisms.
Thanks for looking,

8 commentsI like the pose and the soft side lighting. I hadn't heard of that particular reserve, I'll have to check it out some time.
Rotating the wire's a non-starter IMO.
Very good detail/DOF and colors, well done!

I love the pink in the clouds of the background. You got some really nice light on this image for sure. I too like the wire perch and you have terrific detail in the feet and the feathers. Cap it off with a nice catch light in the eye and this is a nice capture Dennis.
