Liquid Light & Repost

I know it's a bit of a no-no with some to post bird bath shots, but I was in the back yard yesterday morning in one of the few early mornings we get without fog or rain and when I saw the gold reflection in the bird bath (from the garage wall) I couldn't resist. There were at least three shots that I liked, this is my wife's favorite. I have a busy week coming up, but I'll try to find time to post one of the others. Oops! The bird is a juvenile American Goldfinch.

1DMkIV, 500mm f4 ISL + 1.4TC, Black Widow on Gitzo legs, f8, 1/800, iso 640, Av mode with -1/3 compensation. Normal processing in CS4, cropped to 10.9 MP (mostly from the right and top). Taken at 7:32 am on September 4th.

I always appreciate your comments and criticisms.

Thanks for looking,

Dennis, what great color and a perfect color bird to go along with the reflected color. I like this a lot. One thing I would try would be to crop up from the bottom to just before the reflected bird's head, thus eliminating the OOF rim of the bird bath. If you have more room on top I would add room there. If not, I would just keep it as a pano comp. Neat stuff.

I like it! The colors are wonderful. The water is so still the reflection is perfect.

Your no-no turned into a YES-YES! I like this a lot and think Ron's crop idea is a good one. Real good eye to see this and even better to capture it so nicely. Sharon

Ron suggested a recrop to reduce the impact of the oof near rim of the birdbath. Here's my attempt.

The repost works quite well.

I have no problem taking shots at bird baths - I've got a bunch of Lesser Goldfinches doing just that (but without the wonderful golden water).

This is awesome and I love the reflection Dennis. I think I would remove the branches on the left if mine.

Repost works better; in fact, I'd consider going one step further by changing the format to a 4:3 and eliminate the bits on the left. Nice shot!

Love this Dennis, I've been known to shoot em' at the birdbath also
Like the repost best.. I would go a step futher & clone out the blade of dead grass at the rim left, doesn't need to be there.
Well done :toast:
