Immature Night Heron

I believe this is an immature Black Crowned Night Heron. I've never seen one before and the eye color is throwing me off.

It took off about five feet from me while I was kayaking in a marsh and watching a Kingfisher. Scared the *** out of me!

Nikon D300; Sigma 500 4.5; f 5.6 @ 1/1600th; ISO 320; HH; approx. 50% crop.

Tom, yes, this is a juvie BCNH. The larger version shows nice detail and sharpness. I always love the eye color on these birds. Really grabs you. I might brighten this just a bit if it were mine. Nice flight shot.

Larger version shows really good detail in the feathers and the eye. As Ron has suggested I would globaly raise the exposure on this image a touch. Did you get the king fisher???

Well caught. I agree with increasing the exposure. Good reaction time! I have to admit, I would have lost both the kingfisher and this.

They are lovely birds. I like the translucence of the wing that is here. I would prefer more room on the right for him to fly in to. And perhaps some brightening.
