Two Sisters

I really love the shapes and patterns in the red sandstone of the 4-corners area (AZ, NM, CO, UT). This photo is from Canyon de Chelly National Monument in northern AZ. It is a beautiful place, and is mostly part of a Navajo reservation, one of the longest continuously inhabited places in the US. This rock wall is probably close to 1000' tall, though the sisters are more like a couple hundred (I'm not very good with estimating). My sister is the one who pointed out that this was "two sisters" profiles. I like the idea.

I took this a few years ago, before I had my D200, or D300. I always liked the feel of the D100. It was my first DSLR.

Nikon D100; 80-400mm f4.5-5.6 VR lens @ 400mm

Another wonderful feature of that magic place. I hadn't see this and so glad you posted it. You did a great job of presenting this when the sun was just right to outline the features of the noses and face. Thumbs up, Margaret

Margaret,

Definitely a fascinating feature and I agree with Charlie that the light and shadows created work very well to define and help emphasize the features. I might even suggest taking a little liberty with saturation and perhaps maybe even contrast to give this just a tad more punch, considering the hotter, direct light.

I do like that you isolated these faces with your chosen comp and focal length.

My mom loves seeing things like this and she is way better at it than I am, but I always like what she picks out. The two sisters are apparent to me, but in a bit of cubist rendition.

I like your description. It took me a minute or so to find the sisters, but now that I see them, there's lots of detail supporting your vision, like the "sweep of hair" across the forehead. I've been moving the image across my monitor and think that a modest crop from the right, about halfway through the 2nd bush helps emphasize their features. Nice seeing!
