Feisty Egrets

Watching Snowy Egrets hunt is never boring. They are the most excitable of all wading birds imo.
An interesting trait is they only seem to attack each other. When a group of mixed waders feed together, snowys attack snowys and little blues go after their kind, same with Ibis. Once in a while I've seen a Little Blue chase a Snowy, but not often.

I used a large aperture in an attempt to isolate one or two birds.

Wayne, this is a great action image with lots of interest. I might have thought about a bit more room all around, good work.

Interesting action shot. The two birds with the stretched out wings are very attracive. With their raised and spread wings and the wild "hair" they look like they are conducting a symphony. The OOF birds in the BG are a bit of a bother to me especially the one overlapped by the wings of the "conductor" to the right. I think I would like it better if there was some separation between them instead of the overlap which is a bit of a distraction for me. IMO if that bird was gone or in another position that didn't overlap the front bird it would be a stronger photo. This looks like a difficult high contrast lighting situation with a wide exposure range between the white birds and the dark BG. I would like a touch more detail in the BG if you could get it but it really looks pretty good as is.

A little bit busy but that center bird really commands our attention. Neat shot Wayne :toast:

Wayne, I agree with Nate - that center bird has the lead role and the other birds are relatively minor players. At first I couldn't figure out where those "yellow slippers" came from at lower right...

Beautiful job on the exposure, really love the white plumage against the inky black water. Really cool how they are all in different poses. A photo you can look at and study at length for the action and detail.

Wayne,

I like all the action seen in this file, and how the OOF birds in the background add a sense of depth. The open bill, spread wings and raised head feathers of the egret in the center is especially fun.
