Shot this, this past March on the garage wall. Background of the siding has been significantly cleaned up. It doesn't look natural, but I feel it emphasizes the fly so well that this is the way I like it.

Olympus E-5
50mm F2 macro
1/60sec @ F11, -1.0 EV
Ring flash used
CWA metering
ISO 200

Even though it's not strictly speaking a nature image, I think that the technical detail is outstanding, especially in the wings.

Excellent detail and sharpness, anyway. I went through a ring flash phase for a while. What I would do is detach the ring and hold it to the side and shoot with one hand. This allowed some modelling and cut down on some of the harsh reflections. More on the eyes and less on the wings would not hurt anything on this one.

Not sure I follow your thinking about this not being a nature image. Because of the altered background? Are you thinking "photo-art?

Yes RL I sometimes remove the ring flash from the lens and hold it to the side, top and sometimes to the bottom of a subject. I wish I had experimented a bit with this bug.

The light BG puts all the attention on your HF, a nicely detailed closeup Charlie.
Colors look good, like that sheen I see on its wings too :toast:
