I had a lot of fun with the callas this week. Their curves, color and poses present many possibilities. I have photographed them singly or dancing with leaves. Here is another composition using another technique which I will described later. (Hint: this is not a B&W conversion but a grayscale image to begin with.

Just a really cool treatment here, Gary. I love the conversion as it reduces this to tones, lines, and forms. :toast:

Don't beat me up if I am wrong..but I think this is X-Ray Technique  - but whatever it turns out to be, extremely well done, Gary.

Superb composition Gary and a very fine black and white. I haven't looked at that many of Dr. Dain Tasker's X-Ray images but I'd guess this might be an X-Ray image. Whatever it is, it's as fine an image of a calla as I've seen. Exceptional image for my tastes. That said, I think this might also be very interesting toned. In particular, I'd love to play with a gradient of duo toning in this. Don't know that it would improve it though - I just think it would be fun to see.

I'm really impressed with this one Gary.

Excellent composition and detail. Can't wait to hear how this was done. From what I've seen in stores I would assume some kind of x-ray. If done by other means would sure like to hear the details.

Thanks everyone for your comments. You are all right of course - this is a plain x-ray of the flowers. The resultant image in dicom format is about 28 MB. which can be open straight into CS5 without any need for a converter. I inverted the image and clean up the background. Adjust with curve and levels and high pass filter + burn and dodge. The stem of the left calla looks normal on the outside but on the xray, there is irregularity and decrease density in the central channel which I did not know the significance of until two days later when the stem just rot out and the flower fell into the bowl (see ikebana #8) - so the xray can diagnose problems with the flower before it manifests.

Pat:
I want to try to colorize this at some stage but my PS skill in this is pretty rudimentary at this stage - have to learn about this before I do them.

I like to acknowledge and thank Wallace (chief radiographer) at the hospital where I work for his expertise in exposing these flowers

Extraordinary image, Gary ! Fascinating to see the calla this way - almost an X-ray in a way. Not too sure yet about the aesthetics, but then I would read this perhaps as a ` scientific ' image. Beautifully presented.

Neat idea. It looks like an xray image. I'm guessing that the flowers were strongly backlit.

I love them equally, but differently. The black and white is more artistically interesting, while the color is more commercially interesting (without the red border). A very cool presentation!
